Armstrong Releases Statement on Proposed Blue Cross / Highmark Merger
HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania
Senator Gibson Armstrong (R-13), who chairs the Senate Banking and Insurance
Committee, has released the following statement in response to the proposed
merger between Independence Blue Cross of Philadelphia and Highmark Inc. of
Pittsburgh:
"The
proposed merger between Pennsylvania's two largest health insurers,
possibly by this fall, is a major development that would have a
significant impact on the state's health insurance market. As chairman
of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, I can safely say that we
will be taking a very close look at this development, and I urge the
state attorney general to use his statutory authority to do the same.
"One of the
committee's top priorities is to help facilitate an efficient and
competitive health insurance market in Pennsylvania, and this
announcement certainly calls for scrutiny and careful consideration of
what's best for the Commonwealth's consumers."
