White & Logan
Team Up to Designate Feed Your Neighbor Week in PA
HARRISBURG -- State
Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) and Sen. Sean Logan (D-45) today introduced a Senate
Resolution designating the week of June 5 through 11, 2006 as "Feed Your
Neighbor Week" in Pennsylvania.
The lawmakers
introduced the measure to encourage Pennsylvanians to identify and support the
food banks serving their communities.
"Nearly one
million Pennsylvania citizens need emergency food assistance or help with meals
and groceries. Local and regional food pantries are often the last line of help
for these struggling families," said Senator White. "The assistance a food bank
offers can mean the difference between a family going through a short-term rough
patch, or slipping into a crisis that will require a whole host of services to
remedy. I encourage Pennsylvania citizens to use this week to locate their
local food bank and offer a helping hand through donated food or services. It's
the simplest, most direct way to help a neighbor in need."
Senator White
and Senator Logan announced their resolution during the "Bag Hunger" campaign at
the state Capitol. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and GIANT Food Stores
offered complimentary bag lunches to promote "National Hunger Awareness Day."
Now in its fifth year, the day serves as a platform for domestic hunger-relief
organizations to inform the public about hunger in America.
"There are many
Pennsylvania families living paycheck-to-paycheck, where if only a few things go
wrong, parents find themselves unable to buy enough food for their family," said
Senator Logan. "It is in this dark hour that food banks step up and offer a
helping hand. They provide more than just food. They also offer nutrition
education, to make sure recipients use donated food in an efficient and
healthful manner. At the same time, food banks need our helping hand. They
need food and volunteers to be able to keep doing their noble work. Please help
'Feed Your Neighbor' by supporting a food bank in your area."
One of the food
banks serving Senator White's district is Community Action Inc., serving Clarion
and Jefferson counties.
"I appreciate
Senator White and Senator Logan designating this week as 'Feed Your Neighbor
Week' across Pennsylvania," said executive director Robert Cardamone.
"Emergency food assistance provided by food banks is a way for families to put
food on the table while still paying their bills. There is a constant need, and
we rely on the compassion and support of our fellow citizens in the region to
meet that need."
One of the food
banks serving Senator Logan's district is the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food
Bank, celebrating its 25th anniversary.
"One out of
nine people in Pennsylvania are living in poverty and often are seeking food
assistance. Those in need include infants, toddlers, children and adolescents,
as well as adults, veterans and seniors. We see them all," said chief
executive officer Joyce Rothermel. "It's great that Senator Logan and Senator
White introduced a resolution designating this 'Feed Your Neighbor Week,' and I
hope the spirit of this week lasts all year long."
