Corman Receives Inaugural "Friend of Penn State" Award
HARRISBURG -- On
Friday, June 9, 2006, Senator Jake Corman (R-34) received the inaugural "Friend
of Penn State" legislative award from the Penn State Alumni Association, for the
significant role he has played in the continued improvement of Penn State.
State Sen.
Jake Corman was recognized by the Alumni Association's Awards Committee for his
service to Penn State while representing the 34th Senatorial District, within
which Penn State's University Park campus is located.
"When Senator
Corman supports Penn State, he supports Penn State wholeheartedly and without
reservation, both on the floor of the Senate and in the offices and hallways of
the Capitol. On the few occasions where he has had a concern with a stance Penn
State was taking or an argument Penn State was making, he have had the grace and
courtesy to share his concerns in private," said Rod Kirsch, senior vice
president, development and alumni relations. "In short, he is a trusted and
trustworthy advocate who has worked with the University over and over again to
help develop strategies that effectively forefront and advance the University's
initiatives and needs. Senator Corman is a true friend of Penn State, and we
are grateful for his friendship."
In naming
Corman, the Awards Committee noted that he has been a forceful advocate on
budget issues affecting Penn State; has effectively used his chairmanship of the
Senate Health and Welfare Committee to protect Penn State's medical and health
care programs and funding; and has championed several of Penn State's recent key
capital projects, including the Materials Science Building, Information Science
& Technology Building, and Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
"Over the
years, while representing his district, which include this campus, he has been a
staunch, forceful, and steadfast advocate for the University," Roger Williams,
Executive Director of the Penn State Alumni Association, said of Corman.
"Senator Corman is a friend of Penn State, and he has demonstrated that on a
daily basis, in ways that literally are too numerous to count."
The "Friend of
Penn State" award, part of the Alumni Association's comprehensive recognition
program, recognizes a Pennsylvania legislator who has played a significant role
in the continued improvement of The Pennsylvania State University, the
Commonwealth's land-grant institution. Eligibility is limited to current
members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Nominations are solicited from
the Penn State Grassroots Network, Ag Action Network, alumni chapter leaders,
Office of Governmental Affairs, and the Alumni Association. Then award
recipients are named by the Awards Committee of Alumni Council.
Sen. Corman
represents Centre, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry and parts of Union counties. A
Bellefonte native, Corman earned his bachelor's degree from Penn State in 1993.
He was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1998 and now serves as the chairman
of the Senate Public Health & Welfare Committee, is the vice chairman of the
Senate Committee on Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure, and is a
member of the Appropriations, Banking & Insurance, and Law & Justice committees.
The largest
dues-paying alumni association in the world with more than 156,000 members, the
Penn State Alumni Association connects alumni to the University and to each
other, provides valuable service to members, and supports the University's
mission of teaching, research and service. For more information on all awards
