New Law Heart & Lung Law Extends Benefits to Corrections
Employees
HARRISBURG -- Senator
Jane Orie (R-Allegheny) today attended a bill signing ceremony for a new law
that would extend disability benefits to Department of Corrections'
employees who serve as the primary caregivers to inmates at the state's
correctional facilities.
SB 437, which
Orie sponsored, amends the Enforcement Officer Disability Benefits Law, commonly
known as the "Heart and Lung Act," to extend disability benefits to DOC
employees, who are responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates.
Under current law, only corrections officers are eligible for these benefits.
“With the Governor's signature, this important legislation will fix a shortfall
in the state's coverage of corrections employees. These valued members of the
state corrections system will now receive the same benefits under the Heart and
Lung Act,” “On behalf of my colleagues in the Senate, I want to extend my
heartfelt thanks to all state corrections officers and employees for their
tireless commitment."
The Heart and Lung Act provides salary, medical and hospital expenses for
employees who have been injured or have contracted certain diseases as a result
of their job. For employees who have served at least four consecutive years,
diseases of the heart and tuberculosis of the respiratory system will also be
provided for.

Sen. Jane Orie (R-40) joins the Governor
for an April 24 bill-signing ceremony
for a new law that extends disability benefits to Department of
Corrections' employees who serve as the primary caregivers to inmates at
the state's correctional facilities.
