Wenger Elected Chairman of Senate Appropriations Committee
HARRISBURG -- State
Senator Noah Wenger (R-36) announced today that he has been elected Chairman of
the Senate Appropriations Committee for the remainder of the 2005-2006 term,
filling the vacancy left by Senator Robert Thompson's death on January 28.
Wenger has stepped up to
offer his leadership to the state Senate by filling one of its major leadership
posts at a very important time .
He has proven his ability to lead throughout his 29 years as an elected
official, which includes almost 18 years of
service as the Chairman of the Senate Republican
Caucus.
This is not the first time
Wenger has been called upon for his leadership. On several occasions, he took
the Chairmanship
of the Senate
Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee during periods of vacancy. Wenger has
also been twice asked to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Legislation for
special sessions on property tax reform.
“When I made the
announcement recently that I would not be seeking re-election this year, I
promised to continue working hard for the remainder
of my term as I always have,” Wenger said. “I am honored to be entrusted with
this opportunity, and accepting the appointment reaffirms my commitment to
serving this Commonwealth and the people of the 36th District.
The Senate Appropriations
Committee, which generally meets once a week while the General Assembly is in
session, is responsible for analyzing all legislation containing fiscal
appropriations or mandating the expenditure of funds. In addition, the
Committee also has the responsibility of reviewing the Governor's
budget proposal. As Chairman, Wenger will conduct hearings in the near future
to evaluate Governor Rendell's proposal for the 2006-2007 fiscal year and will
oversee negotiations as the budget process moves forward.
In addition to his new duties as Chairman of the
Appropriations Committee, Wenger will continue to serve as Vice Chairman of the
Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and as Chairman for the Committee
on Legislation during the current special session. He will also remain a member
of the Banking and Insurance, Labor and Industry, and Rules and Executive
Nominations committees in the Senate.
