Rhoades Bill Would Require Training,
Examinations for New School Board Members
HARRISBURG -- During
a Senate Education Committee hearing today, committee chairman James J. Rhoades
(R-29) made it clear that a state-wide training program for newly elected school
board members would benefit students and taxpayers.
“Our public schools are
complicated institutions to run, so it only makes sense that the people who run
them know the fundamentals,” Rhoades said. “This bill would ensure that school
board members have the training they need to make good decisions.”
According to Rhoades, Senate
Bill 298 would require newly elected school board members to complete a program
before they are sworn into office. Members who complete the program, which
would be free of charge, would be issued a certificate.
“If you are running a school
district in the twenty-first century, you need to know something about state and
federal law, school taxes, school finance and academic standards,” Rhoades
said. “We teach our students that knowledge is power. School board members are
dedicated public servants. I just want to make sure our school board members
have the knowledge they need to do the job.”
Rhoades said that the
Committee plans future action on this legislation.
