Lawmakers, Officials to Honor Widener University for Offering Free Education
to Children of U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq
Urge More Schools to Establish
Similar Programs
HARRISBURG -- State
Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) will join fellow lawmakers and officials Tuesday to
recognize Widener University's Children of Active and Reserve Educational
Scholarship (CARES) program and urge other colleges and universities to offer
similar scholarships.
Widener CARES provides a free
undergraduate education to any qualified dependant member of the U.S. Armed
Forces who was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation
Iraqi Freedom.
The event will take place in
the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday, January 31st at 11:30 a.m.
Joining Senator Robbins will
be Representative Paul Semmel (R-187), Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs
and Emergency Preparedness Committee; Widener University President Dr. James T.
Harris III; Major General Robert P. French, Deputy Adjutant General of the
Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and Senator Donald White (R-41), Chairman of
the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
Also expected to attend are
Sen. Dominic Pileggi (R-9), who represents Widener's Main Campus in Chester
(Delaware County); Sen. Jeffrey Piccola (R-15), who represents Widener's Law
School in Harrisburg (Dauphin County); and Representative Mark McNaughton
(R-104), Chairman of the Widener Caucus.
