PA Cancer Alliance to Honor Brightbill for Strong Support of Cancer Research

PHILADELPHIA -- The Pennsylvania Cancer Alliance (PCA), a consortium of the Commonwealth's top cancer centers, will honor State Senate Majority Leader David J. “Chip” Brightbill (R-48) tonight, during a reception at 5:00 p.m.  in the East Wing Rotunda of the State Capitol in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Brightbill, the Senate Majority Leader since 2000, serves the people of Lebanon County and areas of Berks, Chester, Dauphin, and Lancaster counties.  He was selected to receive the PCA's annual award in recognition of his strong support of cancer research during his career.

Brightbill is most noted for his commitment to cancer research in the Commonwealth following the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement of 1998, which provided substantial funds to the 46 states participating in the agreement.  With his active support, Act 77 was signed into law in 2001 dedicating all of the tobacco funds to medical research and other health-related programs.

In addition, Brightbill helped advance the Pennsylvania Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Screening Act, which will go into effect after July 1, 2006.  This act directs the Pennsylvania Department of Heath to provide annual breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women 40 to 49.

Brightbill also is chairman of the Senate Rules and Executive Nominations Committee.  He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Economics and graduated with honors from Duquesne University School of Law.  He has served as District Attorney of Lebanon County and as a member of the Lebanon School Board.

The Pennsylvania Cancer Alliance is working together to fight cancer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by pursuing world-class basic and clinical research to advance the standard of cancer care and improve cancer prevention statewide.  The members of the Alliance are Pennsylvania's leading cancer centers: Drexel University, Philadelphia; Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia; Pennsylvania State University, Hershey; Temple University, Philadelphia; Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Pittsburgh; and The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia.
