Senate Passes Legislation to Protect Cell Phone User Privacy
HARRISBURG -- The
state Senate passed legislation today that would protect the privacy of cell
phone users, according to Sen. Rob Wonderling (R-24).
Senate Bill 713 would
require any cell phone company operating in the Commonwealth with a subscriber
directory to have the express consent of the subscriber before including their
name and number in the directory. The legislation also mandates that a
subscriber cannot be charged a fee for making the choice to not be listed in a
directory, and they may revoke consent at any time.
“Cell phone users should not
be forced to have their name and telephone number published in a directory
without their approval, and certainly shouldn't be charged a fee for opting out
of participating in a subscriber directory,” said Wonderling. “Today's Senate
approval of SB 713 takes us one step closer to further protecting the privacy
rights of all mobile phone users.”
Currently, there are over 6
million wireless consumers in Pennsylvania. Senate Bill 713 is part of a
comprehensive package of legislation to protect the privacy and security of
Pennsylvanians.
