Senate Adopts Robbins' "Community Action Month" Resolution
HARRISBURG -- Today,
the State Senate unanimously approved a measure -- Senate Resolution 83 --
sponsored by Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) designating May as Community Action
Month in Pennsylvania.
First begun over 40 years ago,
community action agencies are private non-profit or public organizations that
combat poverty in local communities. Today, there are 43 Community Action
Agencies in Pennsylvania serving all 67 counties, including the Community Action
Partnership of Mercer Co., Inc., headed by Mr. Ron Errett. Also in the 50th
Senatorial District are chapters in Butler and Lawrence Counties; while Crawford
County is served through Venango County’s chapter.
Through locally designed
programs, community action addresses a multitude of the most pressing needs
facing families, including providing food assistance, emergency and affordable
housing, home weatherization, literacy and education, job training and
placement, transportation, day care, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and
personal and family development.
“The truth is, community
action agencies change lives by helping people help themselves,” said Sen.
Robbins. “This is a great approach and one that provides the real meaning of
‘compassion.’ It’s an approach worthy of applause. I thank Community Action
for its selfless work across the Commonwealth.”
